Best would be the factory system, not offered in the US.

Bonus is the keyfob that comes with it.

This is what you want; http://unitedautosecurity.net/BMW-E3...aspx?sid=13867

Stick to the E46 Diamond Key.

I bought exactly this and it thing seemed awesome at first but is garbage. My keys stopped starting the car (but would still lock and unlock) only 2 weeks after installing this...And customer service has not been helpful. The only thing I can gather is the EWS chip inside the key fob is not receiving a charge so I have opened the keys and re positioned it several times to no avail.

I wouldn't endorse this product at this time.

The EWS chip does require power. It can't magically transmit data without a power source.

There is an inductive coil and capacitor inside the EWS chip.

The EWS ring atenna around the ignition lock induces AC power to the coil and charges the capacitor inside the transponder chip.

E36 does have an induction coil to charge the capacitor

Interesting...But then it does use power via the ring or no?

If my valet and wallet key still work they obviously are oriented correctly so my ignition lock isn't broken I would presume.

The transponder chip is just one EWS component. Could be several other bits. Could be the antenna ring/coil the EWS module or the transeiver box under the steering column.

So with these custom keys, did you have to insert the original chips or what?

But if your valet/spare keys work (start the car) there is nothing wrong with your EWS.

To answer your Q. Yes it uses power. If the capacitor is not charged, the chip an't communicate.
