Arrow Changing fog lights to LED DRLs

Changing fog lights to LED DRLs:

Looking for help from my fellow-BMW enthusiasts.

Loyal for 17 years to BMWs I went to the dark side as I could not resist a great
deal I found on my current 2009 SL550. No worries - my E46 is still in our garage
and coincidentally just tonight we broke 100,000 miles after 9+ years together.
BTW, my wife is thrilled that she ‘inherited’ the car from me 2 months ago ;- )

I liked everything about my car and was not thinking about doing any mods until
I saw a picture where someone successfully converted fog halogen lights to more
modern LED DRLs. My installation went without a hitch and I was very happy
with the overall look and execution. But we are not ‘home free’ just yet.

Since the wattage is lower on LEDs – as we expected, the lights are causing errors
on the dash board. Worse yet, they are not operational yet and are only giving
out some blinks and flashes every so often. My installers expected this and had
a few resistors ready to ‘fool the computer’ that the current is as it should be.
They tried 4 different values, but this only accomplished flickering and different
intervals. No steady-on light and of course – the errors are still on my dash.

I know that MB SLs are not cars that are modified extensively, so I am turning for
help from any car enthusiast that can shed some advice or suggest that I contact
someone (shop / company with accessories?) with knowledge and necessary parts.

Thanks in advance for any input...

(sorry this is not directly BMW related, but I was hoping that the same folks that
know how to overcome these challenges, would know it regardless the make & model
or some of you dealt with same challenges modifying a BMW. Thank you again !)

why don't you just hook it up to the DME power where it comes on with the key accessory power.

Because then it's not turning off with headlamps on and then stuck with having multiple DRL's still or else a bulb out indicator. Doing the wiring method with no LCM coding.

Thank you both for your replies. Tchleung, what do you mean by:
"Doing the wiring method with no LCM coding."

I think you're problem lies in the DRL circuit system and which it drops the voltage down to only illuminate the lights at partial brightness. Measure the voltage coming from the wiring harness, it may be too low to properly light up the LEDS. Although generally LEDs don't have any issues lighting up at partial voltage... Have you tested the LED drl lights directly to 12V to make sure it isn't a faulty light issue?

If it infact is because of a voltage drop issue, then the cleanest way you could do this would be to reflash your LCM module to run DRL's at 100% brightness capacity and also disable the warm/cold bulb checks for that and you will be fine. But you'll need to find someone that has access to the cable etc.

Guys I think you're misunderstanding him. Our E46's don't have bulb checks for fogs, you can unplug them without errors. He is referring to his SL550 not the M3.

OP I would say the resistors should do the trick you just need correctly sized ones. If not that then I would also try finding a shop with an autologic tool and see if you can program the car so it doesn't try to test the fog bulbs.

This is my favorite mod to my car.... There was a lot of anti-LED comments when I posted my thread about it but I can't tell you how many PM's I've had on how to do it lol.... Love the way it looks if done correctly. Updates the whole front end of the car without taking away from the car's original look.....

Which brand LED's did you get? I went for the HELLA's which are the best but they aren't cheap at around $250... Wiring and center mounting them was a bit tricky so PM me if you have questions

Skelzy, I like your LEDs on your E46 !!!!

All good now with my SL550. Someone recommended a really good car stereo shop.
I took the car there and they had everything figured out in one hour.
They were able to calculate the correct load resistor and now there are
no error messages on my dash board. The LEDs are hooked up to the
original fog light circuit so I control them with my fog light switch.

Thank you everyone for your replies !!
