Drove another 3 miles and the car fell out of 4th gear to N, was able to shift it back into gear almost immediately. Parked the car within 10 minutes from that and pulled the codes with my OBII reader. Got P1717.

I let the car cool down for a few hours. Started it again to pull it into the garage and the Cog light is off but SES still on. Pulled the codes again, same thing P1717.

I ordered a Salmon relay and will change that but wondering if any of you had experience with this and what your check list / troubleshooting solutions are after replacement of the Salmon Relay???

If it is the heat related sensor....its just very interesting as I use to drive this car on the 101 in LA during summer for years without any issues and the temps in the mid 90' degrees. Drive it in NJ where I lived for the past 7 years and this is the first time this has happened.
My car is at around 85K now and this has been getting worse with each summer! The rest of the year the car is fine, but this summer has been especially hot here and it's maddening at times!

It's worse when I'm running around town doing errands and the car sits and heat soak sets in. I'm currently exploring options and the best choice IMHO is to relocate the whole assembly to a cooler part of the engine bay, like the "front battery area" on my car near the passenger side firewall:

Seems Burkhart is making an extension kit for the cabling and the hydraulic lines now:

Thank you for your thoughts. I should get the Salmon Relay on Friday and I will swap that first and check the fluid. Clear the codes and see what happens.

2003 M3 with 122k

This morning when I unlocked my car, I didn't hear the pump kick on. Hmm. Sure enough, it wouldn't go into gear. Took the '57 356 to work, and when I got home I swapped out the relay - I had a spare relay in the car already, along with the torx driver. Just ordered another relay off of Amazon

The only downer to the whole scenario is I couldn't find my USB/OBD-II dongle so I could fire up INPA go in and look at and clear the codes.

Just following up for everyone here. Got the Salmon Relay, replaced that and then checked the SMG fluid. It was very very low at cold condition. I added Pentosin and then warmed the car up. Checked fluid again and it was still low so I added more. Cleared the P1717 SES light code. No Cog showing upon start up. I then did a test drive at S3, S4, S5 and S6 driving and shifting as fast as possible. So far things seem to be fine, but with Fall coming and Winter - she will be in the garage soon snoozing away. But fingers crossed no other issues.
