Maybe not all models? I don't have the BMW EBA at hand, but I'm pretty sure there is an Einbauanleitung für Standheizung.

I did find it online for the Compact.

Yes, you are absolutely right, but those instructions are for a fitting a system, after the car is built. I have not seen anything to suggest a Standheizung was an E36, factory-installed option. Perhaps, BMW considered the idea at one point, as the IHKR and IHKA have an extra input and some programming to support it.

Genau.

It would've been in the owner's manual if it was a factory option.

Yes you can reprogram them. Did you try to google this first? http://lmgtfy.com/?q=e36+2+button+remote+program
Thank you. I tried Google, but did not find what I needed for a definitive answer. I appreciate your help.

Regarding the fear of losing the fob, other cars that I have had will not let you get in the car (without setting off the alarm) or start the car if you used the remote to lock and secure it and then try and unlock it with only the key. So if I locked it with the fob and the fob broke, I was concerned about being stranded in a car where you could not disarm it. Evidently that may not be the case with this car.

That's the "cross-over" function. This can be coded on of off.

Formally it's mandatory over here to only let the alarm (dis)arm when (un)locked with the remote, but this is never checked, so I coded this off.

Also makes the comfort closure more functional as this can not be done remotely on the GM4. So using this I want it to double (in)lock and (dis)arm.
