Default OEM 2 button key fob from Ebay...can I reprogram for my car?

Hello! I tried a search, but could not find a definitive answer. I have a 1999 M3 with the OEM 2 button alarm remote, and I am deathly afraid of what will happen if I lose it. So I found a used on on Ebay. Can I buy that one and reprogram it for my car, or are they specific to one car for life? Any help is appreciated. I went to the dealer first, and they said they cannot get me one anymore (but did charge me $100 just to get a new key...YIKES).

Deathly afraid of having to use a key if you lose the FOB?! Okay.

Yes you can reprogram them. Did you try to google this first? http://lmgtfy.com/?q=e36+2+button+remote+program

Can they programmed to both open the car and start it? I thought they could only be programmed to open the car, but they will not start the engine?

The key fobs have nothing to do with starting. This is a US E36 question being answered.

In the US we have dealer installed keyless entry systems, essentially an aftermarket solution. European cars had the option (or standard? I don't know, Mpar does) for factory integrated keyless systems. Regardless I'm unaware of any system that BMW offers that allowed remote starting. Only Viper systems and such do that with a rats nest of wiring and relays.

Translated; they only unlock/lock the car (and disarm/arm the alarm).

It was an option here. But I guess most spec'd it as I don't recall ever seeing a later MY's one without at least keyless entry.

But none of my brochures list it as standard.

And here there are different alarm versions. Toad/3G/Sigma, the BMW dealer installed DWA III/IV/V with separate module (and more options) and the fully integrated factory version.

Yeah, and the reason is that, in practice, a German owner would commit a misdemeanor when they idled the engine.

Instead, BMW dealers would install a 5 kW, independent, auxiliary gasoline/diesel-fueled heating system controlled by a clock or by remote control. I seem to remember that an auxiliary heater was an option on 5ers and 7ers, but don't quote me on that.

These days, people tie their systems into their mobile/cell phones and dial ahead for heat or ventilation!

Even on en E36 you could get one.

I double-checked the 1996 German price to make sure my memory had not failed me. It shows the Standheizung (536) option for the 5- 7- and 8-series, but not the 3-. I would surely have ordered it if had it been available.
