I had to go through the same thing. It's a PITA and the car feels terrible with the stock software makes the car drive terrible. Luckily VF is local so I drove there to reflash and a smog shop smogged my car for $20! Knowing i'd pass smog but not visual, I thought i'd roll the dice and use their coupon and hope they wouldn't notice the blower. It worked!

your car still ran decently enough to pass smog on the factory ECU?

I performed smog after the ECU update from VF.

Wow, didn't think you could pass smog in CA with a streetsport kit. Very informative!

I just drove to a random local inspection place in town. I passed emissions in Texas with a Stage II. Though we don't have a sniffer test, I did pass the OBDII plug in. I have no doubt I would have passed a sniffer test since my post cat O2's were within range.

I think the biggest issue might be a visual test, but most places are either not concerned, or don't see enough M3's to know the difference.
