Default Re: DIY for Front Wheel Bearing Replacement?

I've got a bearing going out on the left front, based on what i've read in this thread. High pitching whining when turning right (away from side I think is going back), and it's gotten progressively worse over the last month.

You guys would recommend just replacing both fronts while at it? 121k miles, and to my knowledge, these have never been replaced (I've owned the car since ~79k).

Also, which do you guys recommend from ECS? Worth paying the extra for the OEM BMW?

The second link below:

Has BOTH front bearings/hubs for less than the price of one of the OEM Bmw parts... I'm not at all opposed to spending the extra $$$, but do you guys think it's worth it in this case?

Thanks

I would do both sides. IIRC, I went with F AG brand from fcpeuro site. They are OEM vs OE.

Default DIY for Front Wheel Bearing Replacement?

My symptom was a loud clicking noise under hard turning. I used an F AG bearing; replaced only the bad side.

Hardest part was cutting the old inner race off with a Dremel.

You'll need a thin wall socket for the tight clearance around the 46mm nut.

yeah, don't do that. remove the screws holding on the dust shield, shift the shield towards the front of the car, and you have enough room to get a punch against the back of the race. then (carefully) hammer it off. take care not to damage the abs sensor.

It looks like a different brand on the two bearings that are sold in a kit packaged by ECS - "Optimal"?

Just crazy to me that these as a pair are still a bit less than the OEM BMW single replacement hub/bearing...

Default DIY for Front Wheel Bearing Replacement?

Just curious, about what mileage are you guys finding your wheel bearings last till? I'm at 163k, have no knowledge of them being replaced and haven't had any issues/noises that I'm aware of.

My thoughts exactly. Per my research they are reputable like oem quality German made quality parts. Ecs doesn't sell cheap crap. It's a good deal and it comes with everything. This is my next project.
