my front left was out when i got it at 101k. i replaced them both with F.A.G. imo, it's a false savings going with non-oe/oem parts.

I know Optimal is a brand from Germany, but not sure how good they are compared to F.a.g., but this is something I'd like to do soon, since ill be doing a complete brake upgrade to a 996 conversion. That optimal pair is a great price for the fronts from ECS just wish I knew more history on them

If they meet or exceed oem standards. I can't see a fail it's metal it either works or not. And German made parts are always higher quality. Imho

Well I've been a member for a long time and have owned my car and done all the work for a long time. So yeah my opinion is valid. Just do a google search this question has come up many times and people have installed that brand without any issues at all. E36 m and e46 m. But oem is always a choice if you aren't sure. Something constructive would be a good diy with tools and procedure to do it at home. I have a digital copy of Bentley manual if anyone is up to making a proper diy.

There are non-M DIYs out there. Procedure is identical.

great diy and the one i studied before replacing my bearings. the only weakness is the inner race removal process: as i suggested earlier, shift the dust shield and hammer it off with a punch. definitely avoid cutting it off with a dremel. you could easily end up needing a new king pin.

I did mine a while back .. sorry but i documented in mandarin ..

http://blog.xuite.net/twmpower/twblo...ng+replacement

maybe some pictures there can be worthy your reference ~~

Note:
during my attempt in replacing it .. 3-jaw puller did all the wonders ..
i didn't have to cut anything , or hammer anything off ..

you will need quite some leverage on the 46mm nut to make it on/off easily ..
