I haven't heard rod knock or piston slap on the S54 but I have heard both on an s50 and that doesn't sound like it so my guess is vanos noise of some kind or something that is belt driven.

I have seen the vanos make rattle/knock noises that usually go away as oil temps rise. Never got to diagnose it completely but it was indeed in the vanos somewhere.

Not an expert on these engines but I know engines in general and I'm pretty sure that's not an engine knock. In fact if this were my car I wouldn't be worried about the engine at all. that sounds like a pully of some sort with worn bearings maybe? Altinator, power steering pump, something like that or maybe the vanos?. About as sure as I can be though that that's not from the rotating assembly or head...That's my opinion...

I have a rattle I can't seem to track. When cold, engine sound solid. Once warm get a light rattle somewhere. What makes it worse I discovered the car has solid engine mounts and every sound and vibration is amplified tenfold.

I just listened to the sound file. That's not rod knock. Sound like alt bearing about to fail.
When I start my car this morning, no rod, rattles or knock. Very tight. Could be some thing else like release bearing. The previous owner put a stage "3" clutch in the car and it has chatter which I am not confusing with the engine sound I hear.
I got the car Friday and I am really bummed out that I can 't drive it. Didn't shell money out for it, got it in a trade. Luckily my Dad is Bmw tech and he's like so what, I think he's really thinking father and son time .
I have my own garage to work on it but I don't have the time to be dickin around with it.

Could be your chain tensioner guide, they tend to break off in 2 pieces.
