I don't think any E46 came with the auto-dimming outside mirrors from the factory, but it probably wouldn't be very difficult to retrofit. The BMWs that do have autodimming outside mirrors just use the rear-view mirror to control the dimming; there aren't any extra sensors. The auto-dimming rearview mirrors have a set of pins that are meant to trigger the dimming function on the outside mirrors (pins 4&5 and 6&7 for left & right respectively IIRC). I think you could use the + pins to trigger a relay and wire the relay output to the dimming pins on the mirror. Since the E90s have the exact same shape mirror as the E46, you could grab the dimming mirrors from them. If you don't want to use relays, you could probably grab mirror modules from an E83 (X3) or E85 (Z4) since they're very similar to the E46 electrically.

With all that said, it's not worth retrofitting them IMO. I did a lot of research into this and was very tempted to do the retrofit until I actually drove a car with the dimming mirrors. They just get too damn dim, I nearly hit a couple cars because I couldn't see a damn thing. It's especially bad if you have tints.

I was actually thinking of that. I probably wouldn't mind. All the euro ones should be the same, right?

Which wires go where on the mirror? The black and brown ones.

I just switched out to power fold mirrors with euro glass. I want to put the mirror glass on as the last step and there's no indicators on the posts. Does it matter?

Thanks.

I guess it really doesn't matter....when I swapped mine, I didn't take note of which wires goes where....I just plug them in, and so far, both are working without any problem....

but I might be wrong, hopefully somebody could chime in....

Polarity doesn't matter for these.

Nice thread revival...

I had found a DIY about using something to spin the two tabs under the mirror to one side, which spins a locking collar and releases it. That leaves the tape holding the mirror in place, which peels off without much trouble. Just peel slow and take your time...

I put mine on a couple months ago, and I love them! I had the euro mirrors on my old Jetta and seriously missed them on the M.
