Exclamation 2004 SMG won't crank

Hi all, my daughter has just bought the M3 and our first problem has cropped up. The engine will not crank at all today. She started to see this when cold the past 4-5 days. When dead cold (DC area 50 degrees this morning), key on, everything normal, out of reverse into neutral, brake pressed, turn key no crank. In the past few days it has done this but would start after a few minutes of trying and then be fine for the rest of the day. Lots of starts and stops over the weekend. She ordered a NEW salmon relay after doing some reading and today after the no crank episode, replaced the relay but no good; Same problem = no crank.

Battery is 6 months old.
All terminals are tight and clean.
85000 Miles

Is this then the starter failure?? Usually you could hear a click of the solenoid (on other cars) when the starter has failed unless it's the solenoid that fails.

Any help to remotely diagnose this???

Nope, no little gear light at all.

She hears pumps and other noises when trying to start.

your best bet is to have the codes read. sorry not much we can do at this point. one thing you can try is to wiggle the steering wheel/ignition while pressing on the brake.

Worth maybe checking the hood sensors as well? Doesn’t sound hugely like it would be the reason, but worth a try.

So I stumbled across this looking at something entirely unrelated and thought it might be worth a read.

Thanks for posting this. They seem to be having issues with the engine not firing when cranking when cold. We have a no cranking action. New starter in hand and I will head over to DC this afternoon and change it.

Do you have another key to try, or a Valet key?

Changed the starter for a rebuilt from AutoZone and it cranks immediately! I was shocked that I found it at AZ in stock near to my route to Allie’s house. Easy, easy to get for this emergency job.

All done from the top, never got on the ground once. Before changing, 8 checked the batt and it was reading 12.4 volts so I just dug into it. 2:45 minutes total to change it and get it all buttoned up.

A great result for a few hours work.
