I think I want to locate one of these motors just to place it on an engine stand in the living room and drool over it all day!

Thanks for including us in this project! Looking forward to see how this all comes together. I am actually tossing around the idea of getting a donor M3 to do exactly this myself.

Please share with us what you end up motor mount wise and the brake system. Are you considering mounting all brake/ABS inside the cabin?

You just got signed up bro. Putting a motor in all by my self wasn't much fun.

As for the headers these are just the standard E39 M5 SS headers. Sadly throughout all my digging and communications with both SS and Evolve it just didn't seem like the famous "GTR swap" headers would come to fruition.

I bought these to chop up..........yeah I'm mad in the head. I figured I'd reuse the flanges and fist few inches of piping and also re-use the merge then play connect the dots in between. I have a shop here in Denver that's waiting on me to get to a point where they can asses it. If going full custom is a better route then that will be the route I go.

Send it on out over the winter. I should have this down to a science by then. Don't forget to send a blank check as well.

Man do I miss that car but when they say everything happens for a reason it's true. This engine and chassis combo has always been a dream of mine.

You and me both. The goal is for a next March-May completion. I'm in no hurry really because the car will get an Alpha N tune and here in Colorado I can't really do that in January lol.

I've been posting parts and pieces on facebook for sometime now but wanted to wait till I had some substantial meet before creating a thread. I wanted to be able to answer questions if they were asked.

It sure is a pretty engine, no doubt there.

As for the mount arms, they will be 100% solid which shouldn't surprise anyone if they've followed me at all.

We are trying to re-use the original mounting location. At first I didn't like how far the arm cantilevered from the base to the end of the arm but I've had a buddy automotive and structural engineer look at them and 100% is more than comfortable with them.

Brad,

What about the transmission and ECU? Able to reuse the e46 ECU or you're going standalone?

GL with the build.

Sorry, I completely left that out.

I'm using the Getrag420 from the e39 M5, actually the one that came from the same car as the motor so only 38k miles. The engine placement is actually established by the driveline. In the pic above with the engine in the car the factory trans mounts are bolted up and the drive shaft is installed.

Here is the quibo used to mate the E39 M5 trans with the E46 M3 driveshaft. I've gotta thank Alex and Chris at Performance Eurowerks for pointing me this way.

https://www.revshift.com/shop/bmw-96...sc-adapter.php

As for the ECU I'll be using the E39 M5 DME which for the majority from what I can gather ties in rather well to the E46 wiring harness. This is one part that I'm still not 100% sure on and wont be until I really get there.

The reason for this is we would like to keep the car OBDII compliant which we can do. Once I go full racecar (which will happen) I will remove the oem harness and go full standalone.

Havent been round these parts in years as I'm now into a W211 E55... but a buddy forwarded me this thread... Wanted to wish you the best with this swap.

I always thought this would be the perfect compromise for these cars between modified and stock... just so much to take on as a project. Will be looking forward to your progress and maybe duplicating some day

Excited to see her on the track.

Not to get ahead of things here, but since your exhaust will be custom, can we expect to see side exhaust exits just like the GTR? thanks, Brad!

Thanks man I appreciate it. Honestly, it is a big project. When I started to see these pop up here and there (Alex and Chris initiated my interest) I was like, "oh man this is plug and play" HAHAHAHA oh how I was wrong. I wouldn't really recommend anyone doing this build unless they have the mechanical know how to tackle it themselves or a large budget to pay someone else to do it for them and then from a cost to benefits comparison I don't think it's worth it.

Hey buddy. Hopefully she can make it down to COTA next year to have some fun with you.

The exhaust probably will be the last thing I do. Initially I was planning on going custom dual back to a Status muffler or something similar. Something that would look semi stock and all E46 M3 from the back.

Since I started this I have contemplated having the registration changed from Colorado to Kansas. In Kansas they don't care about a damn thing except for seatbelts and headlights lol. If I can find a way to get this done then it will give me a bit more freedom not only from an exhaust standpoint but will also give me the possibility to go full stand alone ECU with an abbreviated wiring harness just for the basics.

You know I have always wanted side pipes.

The other issue is that for "phase 1" of this build I was wanting to retain the factory interior. Basically just to save the $5k it would take me to do a basic fixed back, roll bar and harness setup. If I go side pipes I don't think there is any way I can retain the oem interior.
