Great write up and solid execution! Love that these look factory fresh too.

Your headlights with the fxr retrofit will be way brighter and better than the LED retrofit...

You're better off with HID

Rather have a little less output and WAY better headlights (Bosch) with everything contained inside the light.

Bi-led. That’s nice.

Looks like we can throw HID’s in the obsolete bin now.

Very cool headlight build. I just built a set of lights for my 4runner and did HID because of the cost.

This is all of the extra crap you have to put into an HID setup:

I've never put them in my E36 exactly because of all the mounting and wiring associated that goes with it. Being self contained is amazing, very well done!

nice write-up. I just did this mod on my '17 Impreza, as it just had crappy reflector beam halogens. I got morimoto HID projectors for bi-xenon lamps and the improvement was amazing. Overall I had to do a lot less work than you've done, but I was forced to cut open my headlights from behind because the front and rear wouldn't separate at all, which was annoying.

I tried throwing LED bulbs in there not too long ago, to see if I'd like them more than the Xenons and wow they were horrible. Super bright up to about 5 feet away, after that, nothing at all. It was very weird how poor the light projection was from those LEDs. I assume it's because my projectors were specifically built for Xenon bulbs and LEDs have a different method/direction of light generation, so they need a different projector

Interesting. I'm tempted on my coupe, because lighter

Question: on all the OE LED headlight applications I see, there's large heat sinks everywhere. Most of the aftermarket LED bulbs I see have their heat sinks stick out the back of the bulb/housing.

... Where are you putting your heat? Or is this particular setup just naturally cool enough that it's not a concern?

E.g the current F82 headlight:

The heat is to be seen. So far no issues. They have a massive heatsink and fan. Sealed in the case, not sure yet.

LEDs are not a point light source like Halogen or HID bulbs basically are. They distribute light over a very large area, so they need a completely different lens, and different focal point.
