During my annual holiday in the German Eifel, where it's all hills and forrest and not even a candle of light, you definitely want good headlights. I've had a deer cross the road in front of me too close for comfort.

Talking about screens. I've never missed not having a nav screen in the E36. These screens are usually very bright and it's like having your domelight on.

The amber lights are pretty easy on the eye on anyting but full brightness.
At least on the e46 and e39 stock screens, they have an ambient light sensor built in and vary their brightness by it-- so they're not particularly more blinding than, say, the cluster. I don't feel the need to turn them off other than when I have all the interior lights set to min, and they're certainly nothing like a dome light.

Or, put another way, I don't find my night vision to be any worse in my screen e46 than my screen free e46, nor do I find it worse in my screen e39 than my screen free e39... and maybe it's actually worse on average in the screen free cars, because I have my phone naving more frequently (which is far less aggressive in self dimming than the OE nav screens).

But, yeah, my daily commute is trees and hills and corners and deer, with no street lights (which I love, as a side note... it's the primary reason I'm so hung up on DDing M cars)
