Very nice DD , congrats !

I know that e46 touring are something that you don't see everyday in the USA.
Here in Europe it's an "easy to find" car but now with years and kilometers they are often in bad shape...

I can't wait to see how it's going on and (maybe/I hope) the S54 swap !

Kevin if you do end up s54 swapping it, I'm available as a free set of helping hands! Would love to take part in it. If I keep my e36 for the long haul I'd consider an s54 swap so taking part in a swap firsthand could never hurt!

Great pickup! They're tough to find and as I'm sure you noticed 5 speeds are nearly impossible to come across.

I was on the hunt for one for quite a while but never could find one to pull the trigger on. Ended up keeping my beater 318ti and picked up a 128i for the fun factor

Too scared I'd like it too much. I don't want to test drive cars I can't afford

I dont think there is ever a 'perfect' DD, because we always get bored with a vehicle that is soft and convenient...but then get tired of getting beat up and always having to work driving something that is on edge, and involving. That's why you get a decent DD, but mix it up driving that and your fun car. You just can't take your fun car too far down the track only path and ruin it's on road practicality.

I'm looking for a 2008+ X5 with the V8. I think that would be a great compliment...plus could tow my car whenever I didn't want to drive it long distances to track days. I like them better than my Touareg.
Agreed on all accounts.

But TBH I never got tired of the E38 and that was the softest car I've owned. The E46 touring with the sport package I have to say is incredibly well dampened. It's never harsh but at the same time never feels soft either. I love that.

Re: X5- have you thought about a 35d? Vox Populi has one and he seems pretty happy with it. Tows his M3 with it as well.

But that's the whole point isn't it LOL

You've done an S54 swap though. Give it an S62 or something instead. More of that V8 feel you miss about the E38 (another car I loved).
Well, I'm fortunate to have the E92 so I can drive that when I want to get my V8 fix :-)

And even though I wrench on S54s all the time I do kinda miss having my own. Gas mileage is also somewhat of a consideration (X5 was terrible!)

Congrats man! Wiring isn't so bad with the S54 swap
Get one. Make it your shop car/errands car/back up track car :P

That sounds like a great combo! Two of BMW's latest lightest cars!

Well, nothing special going on but until I can do something more exciting with the car I need to keep it running and driving great!

When I picked the car up it had smoke coming out of the exhaust. Tested the vacuum and it was off the charts. Easy fix with a full intake manifold reseal and replacement of all the crankcase ventilation components.

The front end was also really sloppy. New FCABs and steering coupler fixed that.

Finally I installed a couple OE accessories: aux input and universal garage door opener.

..
yup pretty standard stuff but still had fun lol

You already know I approve of the color...

Get ahold of Ben Liaw at Rogue Engineering for S54 swap info. Ralph Warren in SoCal has that red wagon now. Full M3 drivetrain, including diff. It's a beast!
