The DME will cut fuel entirely when off the throttle and slowing down in gear. If you have a WBO2 gauge such as an Innovate Motorsports LC-1 while doing this you'll see the O2 content will read 20.9% under these conditions (which is the normal atmospheric content). This means NO fuel is being injected. In fact the calibration procedure specified by Innovate Motorsports instructs you to lift throttle in gear from a fairly high RPM in order to clear the exhaust tract in order so that the voltage from the sensor can be baselined.

FWIW, my AA Gen 2 Stg 1 equipped M3 averages ~24 mpg at a 75-80mph highway cruise loaded with the wife, kid and a trunk full of luggage.

EDIT: Above mileage was calculated using the odometer, not using the OBC. Due to my mods the OBC reads high by ~25%. Also the above reading does not consider the fact that with my particular wheel/tire setup my speedo reads high by 7% (GPS verified). Actually mpg is probably closer to 22-23.

Awsome write up. Very interesting to read. The ac vs the windows down is interesting and so true. I saw it on mythbusters and tried it 2 weeks ago when I drove down south. I was in my girls 07 altima with my 2 dogs that equal 150 lbs and a full trunk of luggage. We drove from ny to nc which takes 580 miles of a trip. With one tank of gas we drove 520 miles. Its really funny cause everytime I lowered the window to smoke a cigg the miles went down and then a couple of minutes with the windows back up, the miles would raise 10-20 miles till empty again.

Default I can get 28MPG in my M3 vert

36psi tires cold with an SMG in cruise control, about 26MPG if I have the A/C on with my wife and son and luggage loaded. Bone stock with no engine, drivetrain, or exhaust mods running 1000ft or closer to Sea Level in the spring.

For those who were morbidly curious what an M3 SMG Vert could get with cruise control on.

My on board computer shows between 24-25mpg running on 95ron fuel. When I use 99.2ron I get 26-27mpg and the car is more responsive.

During the week I'm in heavy traffic and on weekends I take the car for screaming second and third-gear drives on twisty back roads.

Put it all together and I average about 17 mpg.

I drove a Saturn and a Civic for 12 years, so I've done my part for fuel economy...

Great thread with lots of useful info!

Perfect timing for my round-trip drive from NJ to Montreal that will happen next month.

Yeah, I make no efforts to save gas on backroads. I actually think it's more fun to try to get better economy on the highway while going fast, though-- it's not like you can ever go fast enough for it to be interesting to be on the highway, so it provides a nice challenge

Man that is good info. I usually take it out of gear when coasting down a hill, or approaching a red light. Won't be doing that anymore! Save the throwout bearing too, while I'm at it.

good call on the octane, I just added a number 5 on it.

To everyone else, note that his 95 and 99.2 aren't actually higher octane than the gas we get here-- just a different measurement system
