Default Anybody Ever Tinker With Cam Timing?

Just curious if anybody has ever played around with cam timing, either mechanically or electronically. I've never read about anything specific and yet we have this wonderful OEM system that's ripe for tuning. Are tuners simply protecting IP and owners not willing to experiment?

If I am not mistaken, tuners are messing with VANOS (cams), Ignition, and fuel. There are programs (enthusiast developed) that will allow you to access and edit yours maps for each. I'd make small changes with heavy logs between...but I am a super novice...self titled haha.

There's a coding & tuning sub forum at the top of the E46 forum page that has lots of info. With vanos it's not as simple as on an old v8 or b-series Honda since each cam can be adjusted individuallly forward or back in real time. Lots of data logging and dyno time needed which is why most people just pay for a tune from a pro.
