Default DME will NOT allow OBD2 communication with no EWS2

Hey everyone, just figured I would post this bit of information, as I just went through a huge ordeal on my NASA GTS2 E36 M3 and missed my first race. The car is a 1998 M3 with no body harness and a thinned engine harness. I had one hell of a time getting the DME to communicate, and searched the forums for hours looking for info on this particular issue. Nobody showed that the DME needed to have EWS2 removed to even read codes when the module is not in place.

Our stock DME in the race car somehow made itself a paperweight while we were building all of the circuits in the car, so I had to use the DME out of my street car. I triple checked my wiring, and neither DME would communicate through the OBD2 port in the race car. The DME from my street car would connect in the street car, but not the race car. The race car DME would not communicate in either.

Jordan from RK-Tunes sent me an EWS2 delete tune for the street car DME, I flashed it, then put it in the race car. It read the DME!

So again, how I came to this conclusion:

1. Race car (DME 1) would not communicate in race car with no body harness

2. Triple checked thinned engine harness

3. Used a known, good (DME 2) out of my street car WITH EWS2, still no luck

4. Attempted to flash DME 1 from race car by putting it in my street car. No communication.

5. Double checked DME 2 in street car again, reads fine.

6. Flashed DME 2 to have no EWS2

7. Put DME 2 back in race car, and all of a sudden it communicates!

Nothing I found on the forums said that EWS would not allow you to read codes. Only that it will not allow the car to start.

If this was known information, sorry that I missed it, and sorry for reposting. Just wanted to post the solution to my problem in hopes that it helps someone in a similar situation.

What's up Adam? Where are you racing these days? Is it televised? Always enjoyed your races. Sorry to hear about your 36 woes.

Hey how's it going? Been a long time since I've posted on here.

Appreciate the compliment. Glad to hear people are watching!

I just sold my PWC MX-5 to a guy in California, and am just spending the 2017 season club racing. Building up a budget for GT4 racing in 2018 though. Not sure if we will go with a Camaro, Mustang, or M4 just yet, but as of now that's the plan.
