I was changing my oil the other day, everything went perfect until I started to tighten down the oil pan drain plug. It just kept spinning. I was able to finally get it out today and this is what I'm left with.
http://imgur.com/a/9zZH2 Is this still repairable with a thread insert like TIMECERT? Looks like quite a lot has broken off in there. I'm gonna run some oil through the engine to try to get as much out as I can, but is this still fixable without buying a new oil pan? |

OK, after further inspection. It looks just like this on the other side too.
Is this normal? Would a normal drain hole have the same slot just with threads? |

That slot look like it is broken.
It's fixable but I would drop the pan and do it correctly.

Identical situation of mine! I was doubtful fixing it because of the missing portion of the slot but http://www.timesert.com/ repair has been holding so far. I didn't have to drop the pan. Its been exactly a month yesterday and not a single drop. They refer you to Amazon to purchase it:

Well, I'm taking my car to get the oil changed today.
Hopefully all goes well. If this happened to another member is another BS problem which we will face in the future?

After the repair, will I still be able to use it as a drain? Will I not always have to worry about leaking?
I see my options as buying a 100 dollar thread repair kit that I may or not be able to still use as a drain plug without worrying it will strip again or leak after every oil change. Or re thread the hole and permanently plug it and get an oil extractor and do a top down oil change from now on? I'd rather do one if it will be a permanent fix obviously. Also thanks for the info Da Jemster. Good to know someone else has gone through this. |

that is to a point you need a time sert. There maybe some small shavings that you wont be able to get to even if you add grease to catch as much as possibley. Sometimes I pour some oil through to hope it drains through the hole. The oil filter will catch most of the metal shavings but the main concern is it going through the oil pump. The best would be dropping the oilpan. Time for rod bearings?
