Default Rattling noise in engine?

Hey guys, the other day I was driving pretty hard through the twisty mountains, in 3rd gear at a constant 3500-4000 rpm. My friend and I pulled over to wait for our friends to catch up and he said he noticed a rattling noise coming from my car, so we popped the hood and there was a noticeable rattle noise that would go with the rpm, he revved it a little and the rattle noise sped up as the rpms went up. We turned my car off and waited a few minutes and we didnt hear it as much, but it was still there. We continued to drive and stopped again so naturally i went to check on it, but this time it wasn't noticeable and if it was there, I couldn't hear it. It's been a few days and Ive driven probably 75 miles since I got back from our run and the noise is still not noticeable or if its there its extremely faint. My main suspects are something in the vanos unit, or something with the timing chains. Anyone have any ideas????

Did you check the oil level.

It can be a bad pulley as well.

Did the oil get pretty hot? Might just have been something that became noticeable due to thinning of hot oil reducing viscosity.

The S54 is a pretty rattly engine already. Did you compare yours to another one to check if you had more rattle ?

you're in the wrong forum bud lol

I'd go with vanos also. google some videos and compare the sound to yours. should sound like metal balls in a can.

Currently diagnosing what sounds like the same issue, or close to it. Is this the same sound you are getting?

Are you getting a low oil pressure light at all? Likely culprits (from what I've gathered) could be valve lifters, lower timing chain tensioner, possibly the VANOS unit.

YES THIS IS THE EXACT SOUND! Thats what mine sounded like the first time I stopped, but since then its HARDLY noticeable at all, like I cant really tell. Does yours speed up as you rev the engine? However no low oil lights or anything, no codes just the rattle. Not even any performance differences besides the noise.
