Default E46 M3 - S65 Conversion Notes / DIY

This project stems from this build thread:
http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=469407

Currently myself and a few friends are in the process of figuring out how to install the motor. This thread will eventually be turned into how you can do it on your own but for now it will document notes as we find them.

Notes so far on attempting to fit the S65
  • Shield around brake master cylinder stick in to far / Will need to be cut
  • Lower cross member might need to be modified
  • Steering nuckel will need to be changed on steering rack / angle looks like should be fine
  • Transmission brace will on S65 transmission will need to be made to keep proper alignment
  • Front drive shaft of e90 will need to be shortened and mated to the rear E46 M3 drive shaft

More to come

Fitted engine to proper height under the hood. Below are the notes as of 12/29

Please excuse the "roughness" of the posts. I am posting this as we complete things and to share progress for all. I will edit and make these cleaner once we are done.
  • Cross member that the front control arms attach to has to be cut and dropped down about a inch. This will require cutting it and making it gusseted to go lower.
  • Area around ABS was cut and provided the needed clearance to get motor in
  • AC pump had to be removed in order to fit engine in frame. This will need a custom bracket to me mounted lower to keep AC.
  • Headers will need to be custom made in order to clear frame rails. These will be basically long tube headers to get proper gap.
  • Steering column will need to be longer and creative route.
  • Engine mounts will be custom in order to mount to stock points.
  • Engine and trans once set to proper depth, the shiftier linkage lines up with the stock E46 M3 shift tunnel.

Currently we are working on getting the motor in place (obviously). Once this is done we can work on each of the areas that need to be fixed. A custom oil pan may need to be made as it site very low currently. As we work through each issue I will post it.

Ultimate goal will be to offer a DIY for those of you that want to do this that can in regard to fabrication. Depending on the pain of this I would be willing to do this again but would asked to be paid for time if you don't want to make it yourself. You supply all the stuff and will make it.

As for coding and wiring I am taking the car to performance techniques in the bay to connect the wires and engine to a S54 ecu. They would also do the coding to make it work which is beyond my skill set.

He's trying to get as close to a real M3 street GTR as you can. (which used a 4.0 V8 that arguably was the test platform for the s65)

YESSSSSSS. I love seeing these. Even though I can only dream of doing the swap. PerkM3 did the S62 and has documented quite a bit as well. Should be a good resource to bounce ideas off.

Thanks for documenting the process!

Been playing with the idea of selling the diesel for a second e46 m and this will make it that much more tempting! Need to keep torque for daily driving duty.
