Congratulations, now you understand the difference between a parts-bin engine (Sti, EVO, and sad to say, 335i to some degree), and a thoroughly-engineered and advanced (even by today's standards) engine - our S54 gem. It's easy to throw a bigger turbo onto a run-of-the-mill engine, or increase displacement and make big numbers. Do so, and you'll get a "mountain" of a torque band that FALLS FLAT AT HIGH RPMS and COMMITS HARAKIRI if allowed to rev to 8000rpms.

Ever wonder why 1st gear on a sportbike goes all the way to 80mph? It's gears are so stretched out because its LINEAR and high-revving engine will kill its passenger if it were geared short, the way you imagine. A bike will flip itself over instantly and our M3s would be uncomfortable and uncontrollable in 1st if geared much shorter than it is. Read on.

Exactly. Those who have driven Honda's VTEC engines will understand - to keep making torque at high RPMs, physics demands that you give up torque at lower RPMs. To get the kind of "jumpy" torque you guys want, you'd have to give up all of that high-RPM fun you same guys talk about. Also, if the M3s engine were that 'torquey,' the redline would be much lower and the gears would be wider.

I like BMW's method - The replacement for displacement is RPMs. It takes direct inheritance of F1 technology to get a 6+ cylinder engine to keep making torque up to 8000 RPMs. It is downright INCREDIBLE that BMW makes V8s and V10s that rev to 8250!

Now, appreciate that amazing piece of engineering motivating your M3s. Sorry for the long post.

To the OP:

How F@#*ing fast do you want to go?! Like one of the other posters said, if you want "really fast," go get a bike.

Keep in mind that our cars do 0-60 in about 4.8 seconds and top out at 155mph, according to BMWNA, at a cost of about $60,000.00. You can go out and buy a P-car for at least twice that price but you won't go twice as fast. Meaning 0-60 in 2.4 secs., or 310 mph top speed.

M3's are pretty damn fast. Even my converible slug is scary fast.

hell, i ran 14.0 with just a intake, header w/test pipe, motor mounts, standard reflash, and toyo T1-S's with a full interior on my '02. i upgraded to race header, programmable ecu, and '05 cams, and it was high 13's all day...best of 13.7@ 102.5 w/ 2.13 60'.
people have run 12.7 with a stock m3, documented...

Idz ran 13 flat stock smg

that's not what this car is about...take them on a back road, then see how fast the gap increases...

I came from a E46 325i to my M3 and it felt wicked fast at first. Now, I'm used to it and there are points in the powerband where I feel it needs more power ... probably torque. Funny how I adjusted in just a few months.
