Default Newer Member - 97 M3 Coupe - question about steering wheel/horn

Hey everyone! My name is Steve, and I picked up a 97 M3 coupe/5 speed in December, and have been slowly working on getting it ready for the road. It was driveable when I bought it, but needed a heap of things done. So far I've:
-replaced cracked windshield
-new strut mounts
-new control arms/bushings
-rear shock tower reinforcements
-ABS sensors
-replaced fan harness connector
-replaced parking brake shoes/adjusted pbrake
-replaced steering shaft bushings

Still have lots to do (shifter bushings/axles/motor mounts) - but at the moment I'm trying to get the problem I've got with the steering wheel and horns worked out.

When I bought it the PO had jammed a Z3 wheel on the column, breaking the clockspring and he cut the horns off of the harness and removed them. I bought a new set of horns and connectors (a whole harness actually), and a stock 4 spoke wheel/clockspring.

I installed the horns and the new wheel/clockspring, and the horn only blows when the wheel is turned 90 degrees to the right and I hold the horn button, but in no other position. If I rotate it while holding the horn, it will blow at the 90 degree mark, and then stop as I center the wheel. Is this indicative of an issue with the clockspring? I pulled it off the wheel, lubes the contact ring, cleaned the inside of it with contact cleaner, and still have the same result.

Any input would be appreciated - this is a great forum and a great resource!
Steve

Do you have to turn the wheel 90 degrees AND push the horn button to get it to work or does the horn automatically come on when you just turn the wheel 90 degrees?

Thanks for the input so far! Yes, I have to turn the wheel 90 degree and hit the horn, and it works...but if I hold the horn and rotate back to center, the horn stops blowing...

The switch bracket and horn wiring had to be modified to get that Z3 wheel working. It's been 10 years since I swapped mine, so my memory is foggy, but I'm surprised you were able to install a 4 spoke without swapping the switch bracket. Here's info on the 3 spoke swap process, which will hopefully aid you in determining what you have in there.

If it were me, I'd get a proper 3 spoke for the car and follow those DIYs to get it sorted out. The 4 spoke is ghastly and less functional.

Thanks, guys! I'll look into the 3 spoke wheels as well, they do look a lot nicer than the 4 spoker. The PO jammed the original clockspring onto the Z3 wheel by grinding down the back of the wheel, breaking off the turn signal tab, and not connecting the horn at all. I can't pass inspection without a horn, so I wanted to make sure it was working. Turns out he took the horns out of the car, and instead of just disconnecting them, he cut the harness. So I have a harness from ebay with the horns, have them wired in and mounted, and am working on getting it to work so I can pass inspection.

I ordered another horn pin from ECS, and will replace that, before I go any further. Is there a ground wire that runs through the steering column?

So I got a great wheel from eBay, a non airbag 3 spoke from Canada - fits great, looks great, did the resistor mod so no Airbag light....and the horn still only blows when I turn the wheel and hit the button. I replaced the carbon pin while I was in there. Is there a ground wire that runs through the steering column that could be pinched? Thanks for any help!
