Default Re: ZF320 Detent Pin Question

So last night I had a couple friends over and we were looking at this and talking it through.

One of my friends suggested using a clamp and a socket to hold the R spring in to test resistance. We tested the R pin ramp in several directions and found that when the ramp is facing forward or up it exhibits the behavior I was experiencing. (1-2 being 100% unavailable and R would stick)

I have no idea how the pin managed to rotate in the process, but either it did or I got confused and installed it pointing up or something.

We also tested the pin at a 45* angle facing down and forward. When shifting into R, the pin righted itself so clearly my pin was WAY off.

Just a follow-up and probably my last post in this thread.

Parts arrived and I got the trans back together and tested on bench prior to install:

Thanks for updating this on what you've found. Something for people to keep an eye on when doing this fix

Of course.

Coincidentally, I've got another trans on the workbench right now (my loaner trans) that we're going to start the detent pin refresh on tonight.

Mine was a good guinea pig to practice on first, I guess lol

I have to pull mine in the coming months and get it done. Did you buy the kit from Thayer or did you piece everything together yourself

A friend and I went in on the drift tools and purchased two Thayer kits for the pins.

Everything in the kit was OEM and reasonably priced.

I spent the extra $85 from ECS and picked up the selector rod and various parts to do that as well since I had the trans out anyway.

My friend opted not to do that part of the job.

That's good. I'll probably go the Thayer kit this time. Last time I put it all together myself
