Default Camshaft maintenance

Car is in for a valve adjustment, and my mechanic noticed some writing by the camshaft bearings. This doesn't look stock. What kind of work/modifications would involve writing like this?

maybe the mileage noted down when the cam or something related was changed ..

i've similar stuff done by shops to note valve adjustment and the like.

Mechanic must be new to working on S54's They all have that unless it's been scrubbed clean or covered in oil residue. That writing is from the factory and a matching number will be written on the cylinder head on the lip just in front of where the vanos mates up. It's to make sure the correct thrust bearing flange goes with the correct cylinder head during the machining process.
