I feel like I've seen the 5L jugs (Pentosin had one too I thought, not just BMW) online before which would work out better for someone in your situ.

That's what I've bought to date.

I'm with tbone on this, stay with spec. Castrol and Pentosin were OEs in different markets close as I can find, but I expect other 75w80 GL4's would be fine if you find/have those.

Do NOT use Redline ATF or any other atf; Redline "says" it's the proper application for our trannies, it is not. ATF may be the spec on lower HP/torque applications for the 420G, but it isn't for the E46 or E39 M's.

I can attest to this especially in the case of the Royal Purple Synchromax (ATF) that is supposedly for our cars...it feels to thin when shifting. Back in went the Pentosin MTF2 and feels great. Stick with OE spec.

Hello,

It is my understanding that the issue with GL-5 and transmissions is that GL-5 will corrode yellow metals (copper/brass). However, fluids that are spec'd to meet both GL-4 and GL-5 have additive packages that include "corrosion inhibitors and metal deactivators" that have eliminated this problem.

FWIW.

Pentosin MTF2 was discontinued so if you happen to find some it is older inventory. Pentosin now recommends their FFL4 fluid which can be used in place of MTF2. Video they released with more info

^ There's literally no useful info from that video. No science, no details. IF we can find that their GL-5 doesn't have the common eps that are always found in GL5 gear lubes, then that's a start, but only half the equation. Does their GL5 lube contain the FMs found in GL4 lubes for proper synchro action?

I don't know, the CRP guy was condescending, but didn't give any real info.

What we do know, for a fact, is that our tranny calls for a 75w80 GL4 and our diff, a 75w140 GL5. Until I can find more info, I'll do my best to always use the right spec. At least I have 2L of new MTF2 which should last me for a long time, but still a shame that MTF2 has possibly been discontinued - do you have a link to where you got that info?

Gents:

I was in NAPA (big new store) last weekend and they had Pentosin MTF2 on the shelf. If need be, they can order it for you: https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/AOR8056107

Same. Ordered Redline via Turner when I got the car because someone recommended them, ended up switching to Pentosin
