4) Take my foot off the brake.

What happens here is the car will remain in 1st gear since I shut it off still in gear. I move it to neutral after the ignition is completely off so the next time I get into the car, it will automatically move itself from 1st to neutral.
This is what I've gotten used to doing because I didn't want to hear the ringing and didn't want to have to switch the car into N every time I started the car.

Seems like you can shut down the SMG car how you want. I put it in neutral turn the key one click and then shift the car to 1st gear and turn off then.

When you shut down the car make sure it's set in "R" and the hand brake is set. If not, you'll find your gorgeous //M is rolling into a pole.

I'm surprised to see so many different responses. Personally, I put my car in neutral, pull the handbrake, then shut off the engine. Pretttty sure it doesn't matter what you do, as long as the handbrake is set!

Nope, I leave it in neutral. If I'm parked on a particularly steep incline (which is rare), I might leave it in gear.

My friend has a vert but 6 speed, he never parks his car in gear but once he found his car into a curb, luckily no damage was done since the e-break was on so i guess it rolled slowly, but why not use the extra protection if you have it?

I always leave it in 1st gear with ebrake up, I have noticed that if I leave it in R it takes longer for it to get it back in N sometimes to start the car. Meaning that the gear indicator will still show it in R sometimes even though already moved it to N so I have to put it back in R then back to N for it to actually show in the gear indicator. It freaked me out the second week of ownership because it wouldnt change and couldn't start the car so finally got it started and took it in and evrything checked out fine no codes for smg and pump primes correctly so not sure why it did that but i tend to avoid leaving it in R and only 1st.

i used to park it in neutral and always got the beeping sound. Now i park it in first w/handbrake and no more beeping...seems like bmw wants us to leave it in first and start in neutral.
