Exclamation Help diagnosing 2003 E46 M3 engine ticking noise?

I was wondering if you guys could possibly help diagnose this engine noise on my 2003 M3 (SMG, 113,000 miles, no other major issues recently). I originally took the car in a few weeks back for some routine maintenance, and during a valve adjustment my mechanic (a reputable BMW specialty shop) discovered that one of the tabs on the VANOS exhaust hub had broken off. So after replacing a couple parts of the VANOS (I think the exhaust hub and oil pump disc), the car behaved fine for a while.

But then about a week or two later, my engine started this ticking / clicking noise. My mechanic then ended up replacing the entire VANOS unit, but the ticking still remains. He even performed an additional valve adjustment to ensure that they did not miss anything during the first one (after replacing just the hub / oil disc), but the noise is still there.

For now I have the car back in my possession and haven't driven it more than a couple miles. The mechanic said that it does not appear to be coming from the top part of the engine (i.e. cams / valves) and is theorizing that it may be the connecting rod bearings, for which there was a recall back in 2004 (my VIN was part of the bulletin), and they suggested I question BMW as to whether the recall was ever done on my car. I talked to a dealer and he said that the recall was indeed performed, although I didn't actually have him confirm the service bulletin number, which I plan on doing this week.

I know the audio quality may not be great but it should be clearly audible. Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks in advance

sounds like it might just be somewhat louder fuel injectors?

My car's engine noise is almost identical to your video, I think it's just fine (IMO)

I haven't had any of that work done to mine (94k miles...getting valves adjusted soon) and mine sounds very similar.

Doesn't sound normal too me, hopefully it's just valves out of spec.

I hope that doesn't sound like all of your guys' engines, it does not sound normal to me. Doesn't sound like it needs another valve adjustment either; I had a higher pitched ticking noise and it turned out that 21 out of 24 valves were out-of-spec. I really hope it's not the rod bearings as they should be fine for longer considering you had the recall done.

Could it be a water pump or something in the belt area? Do you have an idea on where it loudest?

Doesn't sound deep enough to be rod bearings...

Only loose valves make noise.
