Default Sold the Jet Black, picked up an E90 M3

2008, 6MT, 30k miles, 2 owners, Jet Black/Black.

We sold the JB E46 and are keeping the SG E46. Link to E90M pics:

Very cool car. The midrange punch is about the same as the E46 M3, with maybe a little less ferocity, but above 5k the S65 just screams. The car is really really solid and a good bit more refined. Still very precise, very balanced. Good heavy steering, less feedback. Adjustable shocks work well, from pretty comfortable to pretty stiff, without being harsh. The sedan is very cool, really natural seating position. Super nice interior - I don't get all the hate. This particular car has the carbon trim so the interior is totally black = very cool. Cup holders are dumb, though. Premium sound seems good so far. NAV is kinda in your face but it's already a non-issue.

I paid 33k for it. Interestingly, a similar E46 M3 would cost at least that much.

Congrats! The e9x has far better dynamics for everyday street use than some or most will admit. Enjoy it in the best of health.

And agreed on low speed punch. I feel it’s about on par with the s54 around low rpm, but really opens up on the highway

Nice, congrats on the pick up. I was just browsing those today for sh*ts and giggles. I don't think people hate them its just the experience is not that much "better" than the e46 for the cost (as in my e46 is paid off and I can't justify 30k for an e92 to replace it). Though, as you mention a similar e46 is similar money nowadays.
It would be hard to pay 33k for an e46 over an e92, it is a lot of car, newer, tighter etc.
Any mods planned?

This is basically it for me. At 160k miles, my E46 is worth next to nothing, but I've dumped so much into preventive maintenance that there really isn't much to go wrong in the near future. E9x is a decent car, but it doesn't offer enough improvement for me to trade up.

If my E46 got totaled and I was shopping for a replacement today, an E9x would be high on the list. Though I think ultimately I'd try to stretch and get myself into an F8x.

I've had so many E46Ms that I was ready for a change. Plus, having two in the garage is a little boring. The JB car was a bit more "used" than the SG car and I bought it cheap so it was an inexpensive experiment. Solid car, though, will miss it. But I"m not going anywhere, still have to maintain the wifes SG 6MT car and debate with you guys about wheel diameter and suspension choices

Knowing me, I'll end up giving her the E90 and taking back the 46

It's much more solid, that's for sure, and boy does it really haul ass once on the boil. Down low/mid, pretty much the same as the 46M, stock. This is the one area where it could be a little better, see below.

Yep, been toying with this for years and just couldn't justify 40-45k for a low mileage example with both 46s paid off. But now things are different as the price delta is essentially zero or close to it for super low mileage cars.

Only mods planned are test pipes and tune. This combo runs about $1400 and really wakes up the midrange. Solid gains across the tach for not much money.

We almost got sucked into the F80M scene. Test drove a couple 6MTs, one a ZCP car with the black 666 20" wheels. Absolutely drop dead gorgeous car.

However - did nothing for us from the driver's seat. Laggy, disconnected, spongy HUGE midrange = not at all what you want from an M car. Steering was fine, not great. Car is badass and fast but leaves you wanting more, especially when you look at the price tag. Funny thing is, jumping out of an F80 M3 and into a healthy 46M makes you realize how good the 46 really is - you literally don't feel like you've stepped down at all. It feels better, it's got WAY more response from the motor and is just so rewarding. That was the shocker - going from the F80M directly to the 46M - you're instantly aware that walking away from the $75k F80 was the right move and that buying it would've been a mistake. Not to mention the massive depreciation hit. Phew!

The E9XM, in the right moments, makes the hair on your neck stand up. That's the feeling I want from an M car.

Yep. Very similar to the 46. Same overall feel and character, just more refined. Not as good looking, though - nothing touches the elegant 46 lines.

The only thing I ever wanted from an E9X M was the motor. The S65 is glorious.

No torque but sounds insane.

Heh, I guess we just have different tastes. Friend of mine has an F80 and let me drive it for a couple hundred miles. Most fun I've had in a car a long time, and ever since then my E46 just feels disappointing. I didn't find it to be particularly laggy. Not S54 responsive, but pretty much nothing is.

E92 ZCP on the other hand left me underwhelmed - fine car, but I still felt pretty happy hopping back into my E46.

No way! That’s awesome, my buddy Hunter who sold you the car was just telling me about your e46 yesterday lol.
