Exclamation Urgent- Do I tow or do I drive on different tire?

Hi guys,

Had a LR blow out on my 05 M3 yesterday. Currently running Pilot Sport A/S 3+ at 255/35/19 on the rear. I don't have a "spare" but I had a set of 18in wheels with a Continental 255/45/18. It's almost completely smooth but it did the trick to drive ten mins home at about 30 mph. It was jerkingbig time when I tried to reach speed on the main road (50), so I just slowed down and limped it home.

My dilemma is my ordered tire is 40 mins away, all down winding back roads ~55 mph. I don't have a way to go get the tire mounted and balanced and take it home, plus I need to get the others rebalanced anyways.

My number one question is, am I risking damage even by limping it this far? I know the diff comes into question here. Should I let my insurance pay for the tow this far or should I just limp it? Pls help lol I don't want to deal with the tow if it's okay to drive. I have no problem driving it as long as the risk of damage isn't there.

Also, can't move the bad wheel to the front. Not enough clearance for a rear go there and I don't have another 18 with a front that I'd trust to roll on. The rears hit on the inside if you try to turn with them on.

If you have a set, can you just put two on the car (both rears)?

Don't drive on it anymore. As the name implies, the differential allows the rear wheels to spin at different speeds so the car can turn properly (the outside rear wheel travels further than the inside rear wheel when you make a turn).

However, unlike an open diff, the limited slip unit in the M3 limits the speed difference between the wheels to 25% I think. You're better off just not driving or you're going to wear the LSD clutch pack.

If you don't have access to another car, can you find someone to drive you to the tireshop? Just take your wheel with you to the tireshop, get the new tire mounted, get a ride home and put the wheel on.

Worst case, flat bed it to the tireshop.

Haha...not sure why I didn't think of that. I guess I like to hear myself talk.

Do what he said.

Normal people would.

Me? Of course not. I've got a front and a rear. The other 18 front was damaged, the other 18 rear is even worse than the 18 rear I've got on there now. The current one is smooth all the way (think -worn out- racing tire) and the other rear has cords flopping out of it.

Basically it was a set I took off and chucked to the side and said "well I've got a tire if I need to make it roll" lol I knew it would never work for any sort of distance other than to basically get it out of whatever parking lot or side of the road it was left on.

Unfortunately all of the other cars I have access to are gone during the day until night (aka when they close) and I don't have any other way that far (I kinda live in BFE, forreal) so since I pay for roadside, I may just have to suck it up and flatbed it.

Thanks for the advice on not driving it. That was my main concern. I knew it'd be okay enough to limp it home, but this is a pretty aggressive backroad drive so I think it'd be too much for it.

Could the "ok" 18 be put in front and the 19 from the front put in rear?

Can’t you put both fronts in the back to avoid destroying the diff, and put the mismatched tires up front?

This. Either move one or two of your fronts to the rear and then have the mismatched ones on the front. The key is the same rolling diameter.
