Default Smog nightmare

So today I had issue with not passing smog due to O2 and CAT not being ready sensors. Plugged car into two different OBDII scanners after drive cycle and still same issue! Car is stock 2006 BMW M3 with OEM Comp package and no changes made. Very frustrating how to get it to pass the stupid monitors ready smog?

I currently have this problem but only the CAT monitor wont ready, it's been 3-4k miles already. I plugged a scanner into my car and a p0430 code popped up even though theres no SES/CEL light on my dash. Turns out I probably have to replace a catalytic converter. Since your O2 monitor won't ready maybe you need to change your O2 sensors?

Might need to do the drive OBDII cycle.

Yup did this today was big pain almost rear ended multiple times in slow lane.
Ok so I'm down to only two monitors the evap fuel and secondary air not working.

All others cleared. This is big pain in the ass.

Hi guys,

Ran two drive cycles today and all ready now except for EVAP and air system

obd.jpg

I like the Actron scanner better than the other crappy ones I was using it has better features live data. Any ideas? I like to get the ODB ready clear before spending more $ at smog station just to get same failed test again.

I think you still have to keep at the drive cycle bro. Plenty of advice here and I'm sure you'll pass it fine.

The very same thing happened to me and basically it happens any time you're taking your ride to smog and say within the last 2 months, reset the ECU.

Lesson learned? Don't reset the ECU when you're within 3-5 months of a smog inspection.

The drive cycle process to set everything on this car is a major PIA!

IIRC, you need to start it dead cold and let it idle for a few minutes to do the secondary air test. I believe that CA will let the evap monitor slide.

That is EXACTLY what I did today and still have EVAP and secondary air not ready! Followed FTP cycle to the detail for my M3. I read that there is emissions recall for E46 M3 is that true? I will have shop look at it. Need to pass smog!

I'm going through this right now. Thank goodness this car isn't my daily driver anymore.

I had issues on my car too. Catylist not ready (I blame my CPI High Flows), and SAP Not Ready. It worked I could hear it. I did multiple cold starts which were not easy considering it is summer and ambient temps are high. Check Valve and hoses good. I had to pass my scan a few weeks ago. I deduced that it could be weak o2s but I could see the car lean out so who knows. I ended up taking a partial read of my ecu and replacing the binary with all zeros for those DTCs. After I restarted it was in the ready state. I left the hardware installed. If you search this forum you will see people do this same procedure for the catylist DTC for catless setups. I am not sure how computer savy any of you guys are but it is really easy once you understand how to find the dtcs in hex edit. Basically forces the car into "ready". Most states will let you slide with one monitor not ready (after 2001 or 2002). Keep that in mind. You can usually find this online. Alternatively you can buy the OBD Fusion app and it will tell you if you will pass or not based on your state and whichever monitors it sees are ready.
