Default Re: 6th gear whine

Finally got my fluid changed. Rounded the fill plug so had a little trouble with that. Tried harbor freight's bolt extractors but that couldn't bite onto the plug. Bought the extreme grips by Craftsman, but I couldn't fit it onto the plug due to smg lines. Picked up some made by Irwin and they worked!

Only .5 liter of oil came out of my tranny. It was pitch black and watery too. Last change was 50K miles ago.

I've had an oil leak which I always thought it was from motor oil, but now I think it was always coming from my tranny. Not sure where the leak was coming from. Surprised my transmission still worked like normal with so little fluid in it.

Sucks not having easy way to check this fluid, but here are symptoms I had that resolved this:

- Whine in 6 gear only
- When gears change, it will make a "clank" noise on downshift/upshift; This does not happen all the time

Shifts are buttery smooth and silent now.

Put camera in the trunk and do it same RPM, then mount camera under the hood safely do the same. If you have a go pro, mount it on the side of the car and do the same to try and pin-point location. Whining, luckily for this car, seem to be only differential region related and transmission.

I have not watched the video (not in a place to do that), but if it's a light howl that comes in around 75mph and light throttle, it's a normal thing. You can put butyl strips around the center support bearing to eliminate or reduce this.

Might be worth updating the first post, since people often don't read later posts in the thread
