Similar symptom on my '05. Compressor was fine. Freon was fine. Turns out the A/C relay was fried. Replaced it and A/C gets cold almost instantly even on the hottest of days. Good luck with your troubleshooting!

Had the same symptom as yours over 3-years ago and come to find out it was low on Freon. Our Ms when running low on Freon are designed to cool the drivers' side only and will blow warm/hot air on the passenger side. Have it checked by a reputable AC tech. Re-charged mine myself with a Freon+sealer and it has been freezing my butt off ever since even in >100-degree weather here in FL.

I've witnessed the same scenario Pnick mentioned on a coworkers e46 330i. A full system charge fixed the issue.

AC Freon is in a closed loop system and if there is no leak, it shouldn't run low. Leaks develop as the system gets older...may it be a pin-hole leak somewhere along the loops of tubing (evaporator & condenser coils included) and also from various fittings/connections (sealed by O-rings and the like). During the winter when AC is not used or during long storage these O-rings tend to dry out and shrink & can be a source of leak - that is why it is recommended to run the AC every once in a while to keep them lubricated/moist during the winter. Either way, have it leak tested (I prefer the electronic sniff test which is quicker), leak fixed and recharged accordingly. Our Freon metering device is of the TXV (thermal expansion valve) type and not the fixed orifice type which is prone to clogging if re-charged with a Freon+sealer. I opted for the Freon+sealer, got lucky and it's been working great ever since. Take a pick...

Had same issue with wife's X3, it was low on freon due to a leak in the evaporator coil (apparently a VERY common occurrence).....

All that said, these cars are 15 or so years old these days... It's not particularly unusual to lose enough refrigerant to start impacting performance in that time without any actual failure that requires a component replacement or detectable leak.

Mine did this and it was low freon. I just buy the autozone stuff and recharge it myself every couple years.
