Default E46 Oil Pan Gasket Leak and diff. leak.

Took the car to the stealer and they say that the oil pan gasket is leaking. However, when looking at it myself, there seems to be oil on the engine above the oil pan. Could be possible that the oil spayed up, but to me it seems that something else is leaking the oil. Are oil pan gaskets a common problem? I got 40k miles and it's a 2002. Stealer wants $1,200 to replace the gasket (8 hrs labor). Told them to go fcuk themselves.

Also, differential front seal is leaking fluid. They want $800... I could do this myself though, just going to be a b!tch without a lift. Anyone seen a DIY for this or done this themselves?? Is it difficult or are any special tools needed??

for the oil leak, i would check the oil pressure relief valve first as it is more common to leak than the oil pan gasket. do a search in the forum. it's located on the side of the block just below the exhaust manifold on cylinder #6.

and the pinion diff seal. you have to drop the exhaust and drive shaft. i've done one, it wasn't that hard though if your not technically incline i would not attempt it. you might end up ruining your diff.

The pressure relief valve is what I originally thought it was, I still think that's what is leaking. Dealer doesn't think so however. I'll take a better look at it myself this weekend.

As for the diff. seal, if you say it's not too bad I think I'll go ahead and do it myself. Thanks for the help!

remove the underpanel and take a light. You'll be able to see the plug. As I stated I believe in your previous post if you see a trail of oil originating from the plug then you have your culprit.

I haven't seen too many oil pan gaskets leak on our m3's. Maybe on a higher mileage E46. Diff seals leaking are actually pretty common checking them is as simple as flashing a light under the car and peaking at them.

Just curious, how many miles do you have on the car?
