I alternate between an e46 m3 wagon and e39 M5. I try to make my wife take the M5 whenever possible, as it's just too big/heavy/torquey for me to have fun with. That said, if my DD commute resulted in me going into a city or driving people around I'd prefer it.

I think the M5 costs ~double per mile what the e46M costs.

Me too!

What a wonderful DD it is. 100 miles/day of driving pleasure.

2006 Cadillac CTSV. Bought it new and only drive it in summer. I still love it even though it is 10 years old. Also have my M3 and E36 LS swap so now I rotate.
On holidays road trip in wife;s 135i. It needed a road trip

I daily my e46 m3 in Maine. Love it, not the most practical, but it's a car - it should be driven. e39 m5 will be my winter beater when I find the funds and right one... RWD is not that bad

Winter tires are a must on an m3, but I personally think you're an idiot if you don't buy winters and your car sees snow (regardless of car). No all ski-sons do not count, sorry!

That's when I tend to drive mine the most

M5 gets performance winters (because non performance winters vaporize under the torque in <1000 miles), M3 wagon gets snow snow tires. By default, my wife drives the wagon, I drive the M5. If we get a real/significant snow, we both get bumped up a tier-- wife moves to the suburban on studded snow tires, I move to the M3 wagon on non performance snows.

.... but 98% of my winter commuting is in the M5, making it technically my winter beater

About 5-10 big snowstorms per year in Maine. And with proper winter tires, you're usually fine. My commute is ~15 minutes. That leaves 7 months and 26 days of dry winter driving.... Why drive a boring car for those months, yes an e39 isn't the most economical or practical, but why not have fun with it?!

If I had my pick for a "fun" DD it would be a Focus ST.. especially if we're just talking about winter since those things love the cold air.

Currently I drive a Ram 1500 98% of the time, and while the Hemi is no slouch, it makes getting into the M3 that much more special

I bought the 06 m3 last year as a fun daily driver... and yea it is a perfect dd but I luv it so much that i don't want to drive it daily anymore ..if that makes sense.. so now I'm looking to get another e46 m3 or a golf gti as a dd.

Focus ST is my current daily. I think any hot hatch or sporty compact is usually a decent choice for someone looking for practicality, at the risk of looking a bit immature or boy-racer. There are plenty of cheap cars that you won't feel bad beating on but still provide lots of fun per dollar. In no particular order:
Neon SRT4
SVT Focus
Civic SI
Celica GTS
GTI
Jetta GLI or VR6
Integra
RSX S

The list goes on. Obviously none will equal the M in terms of driving experience but if you have a crappy commute and don't want to waste miles on the M3 there are plenty of very cheap options that will still provide some giggles.
