Click and Clack tackled this years ago.

So, are there any circumstances under which premium gas would be a good idea?

A. If you plan to haul that aforementioned mother-in-law in hot weather, or are going to be driving up monstrous mountain passes with a heavily laden car, then you might consider filling up with a tank of premium gas.

LOL. I can almost always tell the difference between regular and premium fuel in my Mini Cooper S. Same when I owned my m3. Yes, in a daily driver econobox, you most likely wont feel a difference.

When I was growing up my parents had Chrysler minivans (one of them was my first car). Anyways, whenever I would put premium in them I noticed slightly worse performance. Likely because they were older motors and didn't adjust the timing. I'm looking for a comparison which C&D did back in the 90s. They demonstrated that the econoboxes they tested all performed worse on the dyno with premium fuel.

That makes sense. Some cars don't see any benefits. I know I couldn't tell a difference when I was driving long distances with the company Silverado at my old job. It was a 2011 model too.

It's not a case of good vs better, it's whatever the correct fluid spec is. Premium in a Suburban is just as out of place as regular in a 911.

I know my daily driver specifies that premium is needed. I can totally tell when someone who borrows my car puts regular in. Shifting is not as smooth.

If your car does not specify and regular can be used, then I'm not sure if putting premium makes a difference at all.

That...

All my cars specify the need for premium so I use 93 octane in all of them. If I was driving a vehicle which required 87 octane then that's what I would use.

Premium if the car requires it and regular if not. M3 and c63 get 93. Pacifica gets regular.
