Default Rear view mirror interchangeable

Is the rear view mirror interchangeable with other e46 m3. I have a 04 and I might get a 06 mirror if it could work.

Yes.

And also any mirror from other models. They all use the same mount. The mirror bases have different styles, but all fit the hexagonal mount.

I have an EC/Compass/Alarm led mirror from a 2006 X5 in my 1998 M3.

I feel like we just had a thread like this. Does anyone search their issues anymore?

Yes, even my e36 mirror worked in my M3 for a while. Be sure that the donor mirror comes from your same body style (coupe or convertible). The keyless entry pickup for convertibles is in the mirror and for coupes it's in the driver's A-pillar IIRC. Therefore if you put a coupe mirror in a convertible, your keyless entry won't work.

should be fine as long as you're not swapping an oval mirror when you previously had a square mirror with assist. more info here

I guess "interchangeable" could mean different things, from will it fit to is it PnP?

Rewiring might apply. Always check the ETM/WDS and never just swap anything around, assuming it will be PnP.

The compass/led/ec(/gto) mirror does not exist with remote control electronics. The GTO board is taking that space, on non-GTO version, that space is empty.

I opened both mirrors and fitted the remote control circuit board of my E36 into the GTO board space. Then it took some rewiring of pins by comparing the wiring at both the base connector and pcb connectors and adding a control wire to get the led to funtion. It's controlled by the GM4 by connection it to ground. Since +12v is already going to the mirror, I used that to internally connect it to the led hot side. And since all other 9 pins were already taken.
EU E36's had the auto-dimm option and GM4 controlled remote control (keyless entry) so all wiring was already innplace, bar the led).

So yes, any mirror should fit, but do compare wiring diagrams.

I have a 5 series mirror in mine. Plug and play, got homelink in it for my garage.
As a side benefit, you can actually see whts behind you, instead of that afterthought oval they put in there.
