92k on my 2008 Black on Black.

SMG pump took a dump at around 75k. It was under warranty (4500 or so they told me).

Knock on wood, this car is ****ing amazing. Drove it tonight. The sound. Oh man, its intoxicating. I have mine sitting on 20" LMS, and the car is always getting looks (mostly because of the "shiny" wheels) but most folks have no idea what it is. Its just a Chevy Malibu with a BMW logo, right?

(Yes, I washed the M5 at a DIY car wash. No, I dont use the damn brushes. )

Was described as a 4 door 430 when new. It's just trying to follow through on the promise.

I, too, think it's unownable. Vanos solenoids (4 per engine) recently went from $340 to ~$1700 each. They last 50-60,000 miles generally.
Main bearings are undersized, can nuke the engine at random. Engine out to replace preventative
rod bears are undersized, can nuke the engine at random (these can be fixed now, relatively easily)
SMG failures
iDrive failures
sunroof leak failures

I'd love to have one in 6mt. But... I'm too poor for the above.

Infinity Design just released the first set of equal length, long tube headers for the S85. ZOMG.

I still loved that car.

oh man, what's the percentage of the e60M5s nuking themselves though? I really want one; there is a local 08 white on white, one owner, 120,000 miles for $18,000 - clean Carfax as well. Thinking if i could pick it up for $15,000 or so i should do it just because i never had a v10 and that sound.

We all read horror stories of the e46M3 blowing engines and i had mine for 10 1/2 years 191,000 miles and everything was original, clutch too - with 6 years of track abuse

S54s are much less explosive, and you can buy a used one for $3k if the shit hits the fan. That doesn't even buy you two (wear item) vanos solenoids on the s85...

same thing I've heard about transmissions and the M62 engines.

I'd say both the odds and the cost of repairs are significantly higher in the M5/6 because of the incidents with a much smaller pool of total cars vs the number of incidents in the M3's which had a much higher volume of cars in comparison.
Should you make that choice. Maybe it would be worth doing a VANOS delete once the vanos dies, and also doing preventative bearing upgrades before driving the car. Also, find a manuel.

i wouldnt keep the car too long - it would be a third car to have fun with sometimes and maybe a road trip or two - then dump in a year, just trying to predict total amount for that year with further depreciation and maintenance

I would only buy a $15k e60 M5 if you are good with throwing it away if you have to. Worse case scenario, the car cost you $15 grand. You could always part it out or sell it as a parts car to recoup some of that as well.

This is one of those instances where it is better to admire a E60 M5 from a distance.
