Apex makes 17s. I'm sure you can even find something used over in the E36 crowd.

Heh...I had them as leftovers from when I sold my E46 Touring. I didn't know about the 17's fitting, but these are sitting in the garage waiting to be used.

As others have said, with snow tires narrower is better. Also, more sidewall is better, so I'd cross 19s off the list. Benefit of a square setup is tire rotation. This could add up over time -- good winter tires like Blizzaks are expensive. Benefit of going with OEM staggered setup is you may already own the wheels, and if not you can find a secondhand set cheap, plus the wheels will be more tucked in (less stuff down the side of the car, as Bimmerchop mentioned). If aesthetics matter, darker colors will hide the dirt and brake dust better.

I decided to buy two sets of Bimmerworld TA16s (gloss black) in 18x9.5 ET35, with studs and 12.5mm spacers in the rear. The winter set has Blizzak LM001s in 255/40-18. The width isn't ideal for winter, but I wanted two matched sets in case BW stops producing them and I bust a wheel. Plus, they are pretty sharp and I love 'em so far. This will be my first full winter with that setup, so I can't comment on how they perform, but my expectations for the Blizzaks are high based on past experience in other vehicles.

If I were going with a winter only setup, this would be my choice.

I currently run square OE 18s with Michelin PA4s and it's glorious. Downside is chains don't fit, so if you live in a place where they're legally mandated in the winter (getting up to Alta or whatever) then you could opt for 225s on 17" wheels. I have a set of style 157s (8J ET34) from an E90 for that purpose, though I'm trying to get rid of them. They clear the stock brakes just fine, but the rear fenders look ridiculous even with spacers. With the sidewall height on a 225 17", you'll want to make sure you opt for something on the stiffer side (not WS80s e.g.).

Can't go wrong with stock 18's and snow tires. Cheap, durable, stock offsets and widths, and classic E46 M3 look.
