How wide are the loops they've stitched for the wires? You can use a sewing machine to stitch a seam in the loops so the wires have minimal slack to move away from the cover. That way things would tighten up a bit to counteract the aged foam. It wouldn't be much, but may help out, especially if coupled with smaller hog rings.

How many hog rings are you going through per seat section? Roughly the same as what they had in there from the factory?

The loops are about 3/4" of an inch, when pressed flat. It's just enough to get the wire in easily. I could tighten that, yes, but then it will pull the embedded foam wires harder. The embedded wires are nearly broken free on seats this old. The 1/4" JoAnn fabric headliner foam is a logical choice here. Just puff it up a bit.

I'm doing 3 hog rings across the ribs because that's as many as the foam bottom and back will allow. Hence the holes in the original Polyfil layer.
Once you take one apart, the seat bottom and back has a pocket for each hog ring. It is obvious because the embedded wire is exposed. Exactly the same as from the factory.

Great work OP! I have to mention though that you didn't have Sand Beige; you had a Magma interior. Nice to see that Autoberry pulled through!

His was sand beige, that isn't magma.

It's funny because my friend said the same thing last night till I showed him what magma looks like when aged.

The foam is surprisingly robust. It has to be in pretty bad shape for the wire to pull through. FWIW, the foam itself will hold hog rings in.

I haven't taken apart any E36 seats. But I know with E30 seats, there are obscene amounts of hog rings. Don't be afraid to clamp them right through the leather (and around the wire in areas where the sire isn't exposed) if you feel getting some more in there would tighten things up.

FWIW, in doing Ben's E30 seats with him recently, we went through a bag of 250 hog rings, and dipped into a second bag. We found that it's all about what order you put them in, how tightly you clamp them down, and how evenly you stretch the bolsters.

Best of luck. Just trying to provide from insight from the experience i've had with it. I know how much work this is, and how disappointing it is to not have it come out as perfect as you had hoped.

Good info on the leather, BTW.

Ah, wow, OK yep, I stand corrected. I had a Sand Beige interior in my 318is and it didn't look nearly that aged, but then again, aged Magma looks even more different.

That looks really challenging but I'm sure the end result will be worth the effort.

Maybe this one? I watch it and I get scared. I can always do it later. First I'm going to see how the headrests age on some warm days.
