Default S52 into another e36 m3 body

Hello Everyone,

So unfortunately some old lady rear ended me and sandwiched me with another car. Damages were too much and insurance called it total loss. So that's one 96 m3 coupe off the road. Luckily turns out the Engine was not affected by the accident is completely salvageable.

So I found another 97 m3 sedan for good price.

difference:
96 coupe s52 has 130K on it and Manual tranny
97 sedan s52 has 157k on it and auto tranny

Previous owner said really never did any maintenance to car other than oil changes while he had it.

So I just wanted to get some opinions and some answers to my questions.

Should I put my S52 with manual tranny into the sedan m3 (since I took care of my engine)?
-if so what will I need from my donor m3
-I have read that I will need to program or realign ews. If you can enlighten me why its not plug and play

or

Should I just swap trannies to make the sedan manual?
-is it just plug and play?

thanks in advance for the input

Swap the transmissions and enjoy the sedan. If youre worried about the motor going then just keep the other S52 around since you already have it anyways.

Why not keep motor and trans as spares?

I never thought about it because I wanted to sell one of the engines to get some money back

lol that is extremely tempting though . My question to that is would you need to do anything to the engine while in storage?
