Great write up, I have always debated whether or not I would take this route. As of lately I have been geared towards spending the money on FI, clearly not meant to be paired with a set of 4.10's. If I stay NA, this will definitely be getting done.

Whats the cost involved with a set of 4.10's?

I've heard there quite pricey and rightfully so, yet my hiccup is wanting more power and if Im going to be spending more than 2k Id rather go FI.

The OP went with a complete custom diff, which will run you in the 'hood of $2750 after core.

Others of us, including myself, simply did a gear swap. Buy the 4.10s for $900, and have a local diff pro install them for you for $200-400. You don't get the fancy built 40% lockup LSD unit, but you retain factory parts and save tons of coin.

Also - in regards to power: the 4.10s will amplify the S54 in a big way, but certainly won't increase power. Punch, response, torque, grunt, etc.... all WAY better with the gears.... .but you won't be running down cars in a faster category..... it's still a 333hp 6 banger.

Point is this: 4.10s are hands down the best mod for this car, IMO, but if you want real power then you must go FI. Although I'd argue that a header'd/tuned/4.10s car would be more fun than an FI car. The explosiveness, balance and reliability of this setup FULLY satisfies

There are a lot of options so I didn't want to get too far into price, but I ended up in the $3k range after all was said and done. That includes the entire built unit with all the goodies - including REM polishing, cores trade-in, etc. I'm not the type of guy to blows $ aimlessly on mods, and I can justify this one easily. Would do it again the same way as well.

There's some good info from EricSMG above as well - excellent options if you want to retain your OEM carrier and save a few $.

I've been lucky to not have the M Clunk! At least I didn't notice it before - and I pick up on noises. Would have to check with some others who have the clunk and installed a diff.

Great review! I agree with everything. For those who track their cars often you may want to consider 3.91 ratio instead. I just find myself shifting too often on the track and there are certain sections of the track that I am stuck in 3rd gear. Can't really shift up because the next corner is coming and can't go faster because I am redlining.

+1 on DOCTOR EVIL

i have 3.91 on my car. where i am in 3-4, my buddy is in 4-5, which i find a more annoying gear shift - especially the 5-4 shift (i fear going from 5-2 at speed on the track)

I believe Dan has one set of 4.10's left - everyone else is sold out. Go for it!

Great input as usual, thanks

Im thinking of doing 3.91 and that still leaves me with the availability to go FI in the future. Best of both worlds per say.
