Unhappy e92 m3 Differential Bolt Broken Again!!

First time happened at 18k miles, didn't know about the bolt until BMW tech figured it out after driving my car. The differential was maybe like 20 degrees slouched and when he drove it away to the repair area I could see that when he was putting power on it/accelerating it the differential would slouch clockwise down and then back up.

Now it happened again today, at 39k miles, this time I heard 2 loud pops (differential bolts breaking) and from then on it started thudding every time I lifted the gas pedal (differential hitting the chassis). The car is still drivable in this condition, it just makes a loud thud every time I accelerate and quickly lift off the accelerator.

Reading all the e36/e46 m3 threads about broken differential bolts I think i should check every 5000 miles or so and maybe re-tighten the diff bolts as they become un-tightened over time and then snap (tightened bolts won't snap). Also, I read about one guy that keeps a lot of these bolts laying around as they break often. Also, they were talking about "tensile strength" of the bolts.

I am going to take it in to the dealer tomorrow. Other then this differential bolt problem I have never had a problem with my m3.

That sounds like there is something else wrong that is putting undue stress on the bolts.

Check the other bolts holding the diff in place, one of them might be bent or out of alignment. First time I have ever heard of an e90 chassis breaking one.

So a few flaws so far.. makes sense. Glad that I waited to buy the 2011 version.

Warranty should most definitely cover that. I don't care what your driving style is, a differential bolt should not break.

I can't believe that dealer!!!! I would never, ever go back there and I would be on the phone with BMW NA in a New York second. If action were not taken I would make certain that ABC/Media news gets wind of it.

OP here,

both times the dealer fixed them for free.

You might consider getting the E9X M3 Aluminum Differential Mount Kit

http://www.vacmotorsports.com/catalo...-mount-kit.htm

As for doing this yourself, you will need to:
1) remove the complete exhaust system
2) drill broken bolt out
3) put new bolt in

personally I think you should go to home depot or something and find the biggest bolt and simply tap the differential with a way bigger hole.
