So an improved version of the same car. Kinda like an 997 after the 996 that is the F80 is what I'm hearing.

Sounds like a fine improvement, but I don't see what's gonna grab the attention of someone like me who has zero interest in the F80.

Absolutely this... for every new generation since the forum started. At least I assume the forum hated the E46 at first - I wasnt around then.

But taken as a modern day M5, the current M3 is a great car as long as you spec the adjustable dampers (its way too fing harsh for what it is otherwise)

Oh it was. Only thing people universally liked was the euro engine... outside of that it was too big, too heavy, stupidly available with an automatic gearbox, sounded terrible, suspension was too soft, weak brakes, bad steering, ugly colors (LSB/Phoenix).

You know basically the same exact bullshit as today.

To be honest, I don't think it was possible to hate on the E46 M3 when it first came out.. It was awesome. My love for that car is the very reason which landed me on this website.

Same here. Although I found this place far later than you did.

BMW did improve the current M3/4 significantly, so I'm hoping the next gen will be better right out of the box. I'm not interested in BMW making 20 M models, just make the few we care about better.

Also, you should buy an e46, E.
