I thought she was out of line, but she should not have been given the coaching penalty because that is so rarely given.

The racket abuse penalty was justified.

The verbal abuse game penalty was excessive. She was not that abusive. Calling someone a thief? please.

Frankly, she is the best female player of all time, has played at the US Open a million times, generated millions of dollars for them, and has been a huge ambassador for the sport.

I don't mean that to say she should get special treatment, but heck that umpire went out of his way to treat her like a chump, and if I was her I'd be pissed too.

I saw the whole thing and I think she would have lost that match anyway, however.

She was also very classy at the end during the interviews.

Its unfortunate that her behaviour, the refs behaviour, and the situation ended up taking away the success of the win from Naomi Osaka.
I don't think I appreciate the race card, and the woman card being thrown so haphazardly in this situation. I mean, if it was an unfair penalty, the mixed race woman on the other side of the net is the one benefitting.
It may have been due to her high profile, if it was truly unfair.
I don't know enough to know how out of line everything was, but I do know I don't like the accusations of racism and sexism without any confirmed evidence behind it. Unless of course this ref has a history of that, which hasn't been mentioned.

I think there is definitely a sexist attitude about it. Men -- because they are men -- are far more demonstrative and get away with a lot more yelling and abuse than female athletes do.

And I have no reason to dispute Serena's coach when he says that Uncle Toni coaches Nadal non-stop during the match and never gets called on it.

The dude makes one stupid hand gesture that she didn't even see (like she needs coaching anyway) and in a Grand Slam Final (!) he gives her a penalty/warning. I'd be pissed too.

While she may have been out of line I think she was robbed.. Carlos Ramos, the umpire should have looked the other way vs calling that on a friggen gland slam final.

Ref made a stupid and excessive call then multiplied it
Serena did what she does, she deserved a racket penalty and that's it
Osaka had the opportunity to win, which she did
Fans are the real losers, booing a young woman who just won her first grand slam title is disgraceful

I donít watch tennis so am not familiar with the rules, but I know Serena is a champion and true competitor.

She wasnít acting like a champion that day. Itís one thing to complain and tell your side of the story, but to play the sexism card, berate and belittle the umpire, and call him a thief; she definitely let her emotions get to her. Thatís how you lose games and probably why she couldnít recover from being down.

Don't watch tennis but from what I've heard, her behavior wasn't any different from what happens in a typical men's match and yet men never get penalized for it. Breaking a racket deserves a penalty but that should have been it.

So the winner of the U.S. Open takes home something in the neighborhood of $4 MILLION dollars, give or take a few pesos - Now if you just saw $4M doll hairs slip through your fingers, I believe most people would likely be a wee-bit bothered by that, just perhaps that is. As sure as money is green, that would bother me to some degree. Ehh, everybody now and again has an off day. Lastly, since when have you known a woman to be an emotionally rock-steady being, eh? There's just no such thing!! - Hah. To test this, just forget say something trivial like a birthday or a wedding anniversary and see what happens then - BOOM, Mount Vesuvius, that's what happens! They are prone to anger now and again...

I would say, like most athletes, she's highly competitive, and losing, even just a call, is the worst. No worse feeling when you're out there.

I don't think it has to do with money or sex, certain people just hate losing so bad that you see the temper, the petulance.

Not that what you've written about females is wrong though
