The E46 M3 is so much fun though. And they're alot more affordable now on the used market. Why settle. If you're set on the M3, just wait. When it came time for me to get a car, I only wanted either the 01-06 E46 M3 or 04-06 Mercedes E55 (469hp/519tq) or SL 55 (493hp/516tq) the supercharged versions. Well, the E46 M3 was more affordable than the others, but I feel it's also the most fun and most sports car like, the other cars sure had monster engines though. Even after test driving the C63 AMG for fun, it just didn't have that ///M handling feel of the E46 M3. I'm not AMG bashing, we also own an 02' E55.

Getting an M3 is like the cheers saying, "where everyone knows your name". Everyone and their mothers knows what an M3 is when you answer what car you drive. That is not only reputation, but proven science.

The shortest answer as far as E46 goes should be "ZHP."

As far as cabs go, Motor Trend compared the E46 M3 to the CLK55 AMG

Don't forget Audi RS4, if you can find one. I also like the Corvette suggestion more than the G35/Z, but Z06 may be too expensive to compare. One thing I don't think has been mentioned yet is Porsche Boxster / Cayman S or even a 996 Carrera. All three sell for "about" M3 money these days. The biggest real advantage is that M3 has the usable back seat, which perhaps zero of the competitors (beside the AMG and the Nissan twins) have. This is why I just sold my Porsche 993 and I'm about to get an M3.

Have to agree the S2000 honda is great but small.

I feel privileged to own a 2000 Integra type R with same engine as the Honda S2000. These are some of the best cars on the road. Sticker new was $24K.

It loves to be wound up round 7-8,000 rpm's and handles better than anything else in the turns.

Of course the M3 is my prize but my vote for alternative is Type R.

After deciding to sell my E46 M3 I was looking for the next best upgrade. I researched a countless amount of cars for an unknown amount of time, and came to a conclusion, there was really nothing else that compared to the M3 for the price, so I needed another M3.. lol
