Default Opinions: Next car.. 15 M3 or 13 M5.

Given that they are pretty close in price these days, its an interesting choice. I would imagine a number of owners on this forum have entertained this decision. Since I currently own a plethora of various M3s in multiple generations, it would be cool to have another one of the current generation, however it would also be cool to drive something different.

For those of you that have made a choice to buy either the M3 or M5, what have been your major deciding factors? Has one proven to be more or less reliable than the other? Thanks.

Power plans for the car would be a daily driven car - probably, tune, downpipe, exhaust at the very minimum (I havent done the research on what the optimal bang for the buck setups are on either chassis yet).

On initial consideration, my pros/cons list is as follows (Please correct me if you disagree):

M3:
Pros - Better gas mileage, looks a bit more aggressive, looks more modern, interior is nicer, pretty close to the same acceleration of an m5 up to somewhat legal speeds, more nimble and feels noticably lighter than m5, better color combo availability

Cons - smaller than m5 interior, power maxes out around 550ish hp?, more common than m5.

M5:
Pros - much more power potential (heard around 800-850hp on stock block is fairly easy to achieve), much higher "baller" factor , much more room than m3, more rare than m3

Cons - 13MY has shitty headlights and steering wheel, like the '00MY e39 M5 (14+MY price jump is too expensive for the "same" car ), gas guzzler, noticeably heaver than m3 (less fun?),

thanks for the insights.

The more quiet and comfortable car would be the M5 but are we referring to the E60 or F10 M5? If E60 then I would get the F80 M3 hands down. The E60 just feels extremely dated with the interior and exterior wise now. The standard F10 series to me was a major step up and it’s obvious because of how well their sales were for the F10 platform.

I just picked up an F80 M3 coming from an F10 535i w/ mperformance upgrades. Completely different and in the end the most fun is the M3.

Thought I would add that I’ve driven the M5 F10 version and E60 before picking up my M3. M3 just was more tossable and there truly are more M3 enthusiasts to really connect with as opposed to M5 and M6 owners.

850 hp on the M5 will be plenty fast, if youíre looking for sheer acceleration. If youíre planning on going through the twisties or track, youíre still throwing around a boat with the M5.
