1.) The lightweight program ended in 1996. So there would be no engines left over in 1998.

2.) BMW individual was available in the USA, (as was euro delivery) it was just a PITA to get them to do it...

3.) If you think that a low mileage, rare color, well maintained car isn't worth more than $10K, well you are a cheap bastard and are doomed to drive crappy cars. lol And probably shop at Wal-Mart...
