I think of sports car as the broad term to cover all types of cars with a healthy power to weight ratio and handling above a certain threshold. Then I think of GT, supercar, etc. as the sub-genres. 99% of people in the world would laugh in your face if you tried to tell them that a 414hp M3 with it's low slung and wide body is not a sports car.

2 doors, 2 seats, RWD are the minimums to be a sports car. The others fall more into a GT class.

Most only have 2 seats and high performance. M3 is not a sports car to me. It is a luxury performance coupe/sedan.
