A 1971 Ford Ranchero Squire, For When an El Camino Doesn't Have Enough Wood
This thing hauls lumber even when the bed is empty.
Despite being the first "coupe-utility" on the market, the Ford Ranchero exists in the long shadow of the Chevrolet El Camino. That can lead to us overlooking gems like this 1971 Ranchero Squire—it's not an icon, but at the very least, it deserves attention.

Ford offered the Squire trim on the fifth-generation Ranchero, built in 1970 and 1971 and patterened after the popular Country Squire wagon. That meant wood, and lots of it, giving this truck a distinct look. Rancheros of this vintage came equipped with a selection of Ford's V8s, including the wild 429ci Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet engines. This one has a more pedestrian 351ci V8, which should still be powerful enough to haul your stuff around.

Take a look at these pictures, and you'll notice this Ranchero is super clean. The seller says it was subject to a frame-up restoration, and we don't have a hard time believing that. Its interior is especially nice, with all the blue padded vinyl you could ever ask for. This truck has power steering and power brakes, too, which should help make it a lot more drivable in modern traffic.

The seller is looking to get $23,000 on eBay for this Ranchero Squire. You'd probably have to wait a long time before you found a similar truck in such good condition.

We think it's worth your consideration. The El Camino might get all the love, but the Ranchero has a lot to offer.

There's a cream colored Ranchero that I see on a regular basis that is mint. Very cool vehicles.

Since I was a kid I always HATED El Caminos and Rancheros. In addition to being FUGLY, pickup cars just seemed like the answer to the question no one asked.

Hahahahaha...my wife shares the same opinions. The el camino ss is a badass.

Full disclosure: I'd never own one, but I do like the look, especially the old Rancheros.

Hmmm, if that Rancher-roo were mine, I'd fit it with a full on Pro Touring suspension, stiffen the frame, add some bad ass Koni's, Mustang brakes + master, saw out the firewall to make room for a Tremec 6 speed box, 4.11s + LSD, IRS, drop in a fukkin Ford stroked crate motor that knocks-out out 500 ft/lb torque, and lastly a Holley double pumper 750 CFM carb because the fuel sloshes out of the bowl in Edelbrocks and thus interrupts fueling. Peeps might laugh until they whooped at the auto-X! Hah!
